Either one would have been devastating on a scale humanity had never seen. The meteors alone, and the tsunamis they’d caused, and the hurricanes they were bringing in their wake… it didn’t bear thinking about. They were on high ground here, out of hurricane territory.

Camille rocked baby Dominic, though he hadn’t stirred. Baby-rocking was becoming a popular pastime in the Tomberlin household. It soothed and calmed the adults as well as the baby. Outside the window, the sky glowed that peculiar bright green.

And that was it, wasn’t it? The second one. The reason they and everyone here in Sweet Gum had every electronic device unhooked and in a Farraday cage. Even the garages were lined with… something, the details had honestly been so much noise to Camille while Gwen soaked them up like a sponge… to make them Farraday cages to protect the vehicles as much as they could. Val had gotten word two days ago, through channels of information most people weren’t receiving and even fewer were paying attention to as the meteors fell.

The big one. Wouldn’t that be the asteroid, the one they’d successfully broken into pieces but hadn’t kept from hitting the Earth altogether? No. That would be the solar flare, coming to wipe out what remained of their technological infrastructure.

One, two. The meteors, then the flare, arriving like an unsuspected twin at a birth just when the mother is almost wiped out. But all she and all her doctor can do is carry on, carry on. It’s that, or give up and die. Their community had this little warning. Others wouldn’t. They would not give up.
