One of my goals for the year is to learn/relearn to draw. Now, the last time I had an art class was middle school, and while I took art for three years, the instruction wasn't very high-level then. I doodled a lot after that, because it was the only way I could keep my mind on topic in class, but once I was out of school, that was the end of my drawing days. I never had any illusions that I could draw well (even if certain people told me I drew better than I thought I did; I trusted their opinions, but knew I couldn't draw as well as I might have liked).

I'm coming at it by working through the lessons at drawabox.com. The price is right (free!) and the lessons start in the right place for me (there's no assumption that you can immediately dive into figure drawing).

Below are my results from the first lesson.

First up are the three exercises from the first lesson, superimposed lines (draw a line using a straight edge, then trace it another eight times), ghosting lines (draw two endpoints, ghost drawing them above the page several times, then actually do it), and planes.

One oddity of my superimposed lines: my curvy lines tend to be frayed at the starting end, and come to a neat point at the finish, the opposite of what's supposed to happen. (Usually you line up carefully as you start, then the other end looks frayed because your hand strays from the endpoint.)

Then comes an entire page of superimposed lines practice. By the second column I think I was getting pretty good at it, most of the time.

Ghosting Lines, full page. My lines are less straight here because I only had one opportunity to do it right, especially where I drew longer lines. you can also see a few places where I missed or overshot the endpoint altogether. Still, good practice.

Ghosting Planes, full page. The most difficult in that it involved ghosting lines and putting them together with other lines, and they all had to be straight to work (you can see a couple I superimposed to get them right), but also the most fun. I love perspective drawing.
